Computational modelling of combined storm surge and wave overtopping of embankments

چکیده
In this paper we investigate the process of embankment wave overtopping combinedwith overflow due to extreme surge levels that are above the embankment crest. AReynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS-VOF) model is employed to simulate thehydrodynamics. To investigate the success of the model at reproducing thehydrodynamic processes, the model is compared with experimental laboratorymeasurements. Comparisons are performed for quantities including discharge, depthand velocity. The overtopping discharge predicted by the model is compared againstempirical design methods. Specific conditions under which discrepancies occur betweenthe model, laboratory measurements and design formulae are identified and explainedand design guidance is provided. This study has demonstrated that the RANS model can adequately represent thecomplex hydrodynamics encountered in extreme storms where combined overflow andwave overtopping occurs. A tendency was found for the model to somewhat over-predict the overtopping volume as wave heights increase and has been hypothesised asbeing due to shortcomings of the representation of turbulence within the model.

Embankment overtopping protection systems
For the last decades, the design floods of numerous embankment reservoirs were re-evaluated, and the revised spillway outflows are typically larger than those used in the original designs. As a result, a number of overtopping protection systems were developed for embankments and earthfill dams, with applications encompassing river dykes, coastal barriers for storm surge and tsunami protections....

The Gonu tropical cyclone is the strongest storm in the Arabian Sea in which has cause damage in the Iranian south coastlines. The aim of the current paper is to numerically simulate the wave’s characteristics as well as the storm surge during the Gonu event by employing the SWAN wave model and the GETM hydrodynamic model. The simulation duration is one month i.e. from15 May to 15 June 2007. Th...

This paper presents the results of downscaling effects when modelling waves, tides and storm surge using a nested modelling system. In this study, the coupled POLCOMS/ProWAM models are used, with 3 nested computational domains, the largest of which covers part of north-eastern Atlantic Ocean with a coarse resolution grid and the smallest covers the surrounding waters of south-west Cornish coast...
متن کاملPhysical and Economic Impacts of Sea-Level Rise and Low Probability Flooding Events on Coastal Communities
Conventionally flood mapping typically includes only a static water level (e.g. peak of a storm tide) in coastal flood inundation events. Additional factors become increasingly important when increased water-level thresholds are met during the combination of a storm tide and increased mean sea level. This research incorporates factors such as wave overtopping and river flow in a range of flood ...
